  • Candidate must possess a current Basic First Aid (or greater) Card
  • Candidate must possess a current CPR Card

Written Examination

The SARTech II Exam will consist of one hundred and fifty (150) questions.  All questions (except for map questions) are taken from the “Required Text” Section listed at the end of this document.  Candidates will have a maximum of 2 hour and 30 minutes to complete the examination.  A score of 70% or above shall constitute a passing grade for the candidate.

The written examination is broken up into a one hundred and thirty (130) question section and a twenty (20) question section. Each area is scored separately and the candidate must score a 70% or above on both sections. Failures in either portion will constitute a written examination failure.

Written Examination Re-Test Policy

Candidates must pass the written exam prior to taking the practical portion of the SAR Tech II exam.  Candidates who are unsuccessful (less than 70%) on the written test will need to retake the test and successfully pass the exam prior to being allowed to take the practical portion of the certification exam.  Candidates are not eligible for re-testing on the same day as their initial test.

Practical Examination

Practical examinations are intended to measure the practical skills of the SAR Tech II and will follow guidelines set forth in accordance with the policies and procedures of the National Association for Search and Rescue.  A score of 100% for the pre-selected skills shall constitute a passing grade for the candidate.

There are six (6) practical stations that must be successfully completed in order to obtain SAR Tech II Certification:

  • Land Navigation – Map and Compass (Skill Sheet 1)
  • Tracking (Marking Track) (Skill Sheet 2)
  • Land Navigation - GPS Basic Operations (Skill Sheet 3)
  • Rope Skills (Skill Sheet 4)
  • Grid Search-Route Search (Skill Sheet 5)
  • Grid Search-Area Search (Skill Sheet 6)

Candidate will need to bring appropriate equipment (listed at the end of this document), clothing appropriate for the environment (and for SAR work) and ankle supportive-fully enclosed footwear) to each station.

Practical Examination Re-Test Policy

Candidates receiving unsatisfactory grades on more than 40% (Note: more than two skill stations) will fail the skills test. The candidate will not be allowed to retest those stations that day. The candidate will be allowed to retest those stations (during other testing opportunities) as many times necessary (no more than twice per day) or until one year time period has lapsed. If one year has passed and the candidate has not successfully passed all skills stations, the candidate will be required to restart the testing process beginning with the written exam.

Candidates receiving unsatisfactory grades on less than 40% (Note: two or less skill stations) will be allowed to retest those unsatisfactory stations that day. Any station is only allowed to be retested one (1) time at an exam. If after a second (2nd) attempt the candidate is still not successful, the candidate will need to retest on another day.
